LinkedIn Is Facebook for People in Suits. Here's How to Post on It Anyway
Someone asked me the other day how to post on LinkedIn. And true to form, the same way I answer most questions, I'm going to let the answer grow up into an article. But before the how-to, I have to be honest about the where, because I don't want to pretend I love the place. Let me get my feelings about LinkedIn out of the way first I don't really like LinkedIn that much (The people ... the platform is great, but you guys have made the platform unbearable because of your attention-seeking shenanigans). I mostly cross-post things I originally write on DEV, and every time I open the app I get the same feeling: this is a place full of fictional, overly exaggerated content that does not depict reality. Every third post is someone's toddler teaching them a profound lesson about B2B sales. Every rejection is secretly a blessing. Everybody is humbled and thrilled and excited to announce. I hate to say it, but it feels like Facebook, for people in suits. You know the memes. LinkedIn vs. Real Life. If this was posted on LinkedIn. They're funny because they're true. The gap between what happens and what gets posted is the whole joke. And yet. Here's the part I can't argue my way out of: it's still the best place to get hired, and we can't beat that. Recruiters love it. That's just the terrain. Like it or not, we have to play the game. If you can't beat them, join them. So this is me joining them, on my own terms. One thing before the mechanics: I don't trick the algorithm I know the tricks: the “comment ‘GUIDE’ and I’ll DM you the link” bait, the single-word-per-line posts stretched out to look profound, the fake vulnerability, the rage bait, and people posting photos of themselves completely out of context just to farm engagement. I know exactly how all of it works, and I don't do any of it. Not because I'm above it, but because I'm just not that kind of person. I do this for passion. For the love of the game.
