The five primitives I run a whole company on

I run a consumer product company by myself. Physical inventory, two storefronts, multiple marketplaces, subscription billing, bookkeeping, tax filings, government paperwork, content in two languages, and a codebase that ships to production most weeks. Headcount: one. Not "one plus a virtual assistant." One. Three years ago this was not possible. It is also not possible today by keeping a chat window open and asking it questions. The thing that changed is not that models got smarter in the abstract. The thing that changed is that agents can now operate software the way an employee does : click through admin dashboards, fill in government forms, read email, write and deploy code, remember what happened last Tuesday, and run on a schedule without being asked. Once that is true, most of what a small company's staff does becomes a workflow you can write down, hand to an agent, and audit weekly instead of doing daily. Everything I run sits on five primitives. Tool names will churn every six months. These won't. 1. A browser-operating agent An agent that drives a real browser session with my real logins: seller dashboards, banking portals, government sites, ad platforms, email. This is the highest-leverage primitive, and it is the one most people skip. The reason is uncomfortable: roughly 90% of small-business operations live behind a login wall with no usable API. Your marketplace seller console. Your payment provider's merchant dashboard. Your country's tax portal. The grant program that still ships application forms as attachments. If your automation strategy requires an official API for everything, you will automate the 10% that already had one, and you will still be doing the other 90% by hand at 11pm. The browser agent is my hands. It logs in, navigates, reads what's on screen, fills forms, downloads documents, and reports what it found. 2. Riverpod solved many of the fundamental global-state scoping issues inherent in classic InheritedWidget patterns, providing compile-safe dependency injection and clean state isolation. However, as the Flutter ecosystem evolved toward Riverpod 3 , I grew increasingly wary of the direction being pushed: a heavy reliance on mandatory code generation ( @riverpod annotations, build_runner, macros). Code generation introduces build-step friction, bloats compile times, and makes debugging generated syntax opaque. On the other side of the tracks sat BLoC . While I appreciated BLoC's structured, predictable event-to-state machine pattern ( on<Event> ), I was never a big fan of classic BLoC's reliance on underlying Dart Streams . Streams operate asynchronously via microtask queues—introducing subtle frame-rendering latency—and require extensive stream-transformer ceremony for simple state updates. Then came Signals (specifically Rody Davis's signals package). Signals brought raw speed, zero microtask overhead, fine-grained composable reactivity, and pure Dart portability. That realization birthed BlocSignal : combining BLoC's disciplined, enterprise event-state architecture with Signals' synchronous reactivity. What Judges Actually Score: Notes From a Year of Hackathon Judging

I judged three hackathons over about ten days this July: MLH x DigitalOcean "AI for Social Good" on July 11, the Sports World Cup Hackathon in San Francisco on July 17, and Aethera Hacks, an online event on Devpost, across July 19 to 21. I came in from the sports technology side, building athlete monetization tools, so I was usually the judge asking who pays for this rather than the judge asking what is your bundle size. That turned out to be a useful seat, because the questions that decide scores are mostly not technical ones. Here is the part builders rarely get told: a judge is scoring under a hard constraint. Some number of teams, a fixed window, and by the middle of the block the demos start blurring together. Judges are not evaluating your project against an ideal. They are ranking it against the six they just saw while trying to remember which one had the map. Everything below follows from that. The rubric is real, but it is not what separates teams Most events hand judges four or five categories with numbers next to them. Technical difficulty, originality, design, impact, something about use of a sponsor API. Those categories are real and I filled them in honestly. But they compress. Almost every team lands mid-range on most of them, and the spread that produces a winner comes from two or three things the rubric does not name directly. 1. Whether the demo ran This sounds too obvious to write down. It is the single largest score differentiator I saw. A working demo, live, on the judge's screen or the team's laptop, beats a more ambitious project shown as slides almost every time. Not because judges are impressed by working software as such, but because a live demo removes doubt, and doubt is what a judge is actually managing under time pressure.
