Ranking on Google is no longer the same thing as earning a click. Search engines increasingly answer questions directly through AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, local results, and other search features. In early 2026, a SparkToro study reported by Search Engine Land estimated that 68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click during the first four months of the year. The comparison needs to be interpreted carefully because different studies use different data panels, but the direction is clear: a search impression does not automatically become a website visit. For small websites, this does not mean that SEO is dead. It means the goal is becoming broader. A useful page should be easy to discover, easy to understand, worthy of being cited, and valuable enough that a searcher wants to continue reading after seeing the short answer. The practical approach is still to build a website that people can use and trust.
