DRAM Controller Register Manipulation Breaks CPU Memory Isolation
Security researcher Christopher Domas developed skitter-creek-bath-salts, an open-source hardware security tool that disrupts CPU privilege boundaries by manipulating memory controller translation registers. This allows unprivileged software to access protected memory regions, revealing a vulnerability in modern processor architectures that could affect cloud and confidential computing security. AI Genie in the Wild
When I give talks about AI genies , I use this sort of example as a hypothetical. It’s happened . The story is from Australia. Someone named Andrew tasked OpenClaw to book gym classes for him. And…. Minutes later, his AI agent reported it had discovered a way to book Andrew into classes several weeks in advance, far beyond what was supposed to be possible. Andrew, who was sitting fourth on a waitlist for a class later that week, asked if it was possible to move him to the top of the list. The agent came back and told Andrew that it had kicked another gym-goer off the list as part of the testing of its capabilities...

npm Staged Publishing Available, Adding a Human Approval Step Before Packages Go Live
npm has introduced staged publishing for Node.js, requiring maintainer approval before a version is installable. Versions are queued and must pass a two-factor authentication challenge for release. This feature aims to enhance security amid rising supply chain threats. It is available in npm CLI 11.15.0+ and Node 22.14.0+, alongside new configurable permission flags. By Daniel Curtis

Wiz Discloses CosmosEscape, and Practitioners Debate What Customers Could Have Done
Wiz Research disclosed CosmosEscape, a chain that escaped Azure Cosmos DB's Gremlin sandbox and reached a platform-wide key granting read and write access to every database on the service. Microsoft blocked the entry point within two days but took until July 2026 to remove the key. Practitioners debated shared responsibility and what that rearchitecture actually cost. Long-Lived Vulnerability in Microsoft Secure Boot
Microsoft’s Secure Boot has had a serious vulnerability for most of its existence. An industry-wide standard Microsoft invented to protect Windows, and later Linux, devices from firmware infections has been trivial to bypass for 13 of its 14 years of existence. The discovery was made by researchers at security firm ESET after identifying 11 firmware images, at least one from 2013, that were known to be defective but remained signed by the software company anyway. The images are known as shims , which were invented to extend Secure Boot to Linux devices and utility software. Using a technique simple enough to be performed by novice hackers, these old, forgotten shims can be used to completely circumvent the protection, which is embedded into the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) of the device’s motherboard. The gaffe is the result of the failure by Microsoft, which oversees the signing of shims, to revoke the publicly available images once vulnerabilities were found in them...

GitHub Introduces Default "Cooldown" Policy for Dependabot Version Updates
Instead of immediately opening pull requests when newer dependency versions are released, Dependabot now waits three days before suggesting upgrades, thus increasing the likelihood that malicious releases are identified and removed before they can be integrated. By Sergio De Simone

AI-Enabled Security Researchers Discover How a Crafted Video Can Provide Attackers Access to Your PC
JFrog Security Research revealed "PixelSmash," a vulnerability in the FFmpeg media framework, allowing for Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service attacks. Present for sixteen years, it affects numerous applications using the MagicYUV decoder. Exploitation requires only a crafted media file. Users are advised to check for the vulnerability and apply patches or disable the decoder if necessary. By Olimpiu Pop

Critical Zcash Vulnerability Found and Fixed
If you’re a user—owner?—of this cryptocurrency, this is important: On May 29, the security researcher Taylor Hornby found a critical vulnerability in Zcash Orchard privacy pool using Claude Opus 4.8. The Zcash team hired Hornby specifically to look for this kind of issue. He found one fast enough to be embarrassing. The Orchard pool is the newest and most advanced shielded transaction system in the cryptocurrency Zcash. Introduced in 2022, it allows users to send and receive ZEC while keeping transaction details private. It uses zero-knowledge proofs to validate transactions without revealing amounts or participants. The bug: a specific check that was supposed to validate transaction inputs wasn’t actually enforcing the rules it appeared to enforce. An attacker could have exploited the flaw to feed false inputs into that check and generate ZEC from nothing, with the zero-knowledge proof system blessing the fraudulent transaction as valid...

Vulnerability Disclosure in the Age of AI
New article: “ Responsible Disclosure in the Age of AI: A Call for Urgent Action ,” by Melissa Hathaway. Abstract: Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the balance between vulnerability discovery and remediation. Frontier AI models are now capable of autonomously identifying exploitable software vulnerabilities at unprecedented speed and scale. This development exposes decades of accumulated technical debt created by a software industry that prioritized rapid deployment over secure-by-design engineering practices. Drawing on the evolution of software assurance, vulnerability disclosure frameworks, and U.S. cyber policy, this perspective argues that the current moment represents a strategic inflection point for governments, industry, and critical infrastructure operators. The author examines the growing tension between offensive and defensive equities in cyberspace, the emergence of AI-enabled vulnerability discovery capabilities in both the U.S. and China, and the increasing risks posed by unsupported legacy systems and AI-assisted code generation practices. Responsible disclosure can no longer remain a reactive or fragmented process, but must become a coordinated national and international resilience effort involving governments, software vendors, infrastructure operators, and emergency response organizations. The article concludes with an urgent call for accelerated remediation, large-scale patch management coordination, and sustained investment in automated vulnerability repair capabilities before adversaries exploit this rapidly narrowing window of opportunity...
